Our story

Moonstrate is made by Blanket Fort Labs, an Oregon benefit company. Our stated public benefit is expanding access to private, surveillance-free menstrual and cycle health tools.

How Moonstrate came to be

It began with my partner. She had tried the popular period trackers and was tired of them. What she wanted was cycle syncing, the idea she kept seeing on social media of matching food, movement, and rest to the phase you're in. She had gone as far as buying a book on it and building herself a reference guide. I thought I could build the app she was looking for.

Once I started, I went looking for the science behind it, and that changed the app. Some of what gets sold as cycle syncing is well supported. A lot of it isn't. The changes across a cycle are real, but the strict rules stacked on top of them mostly aren't, and the "normal" cycle that everything gets compared to turns out not to exist. So I set out to build something truthful instead: an app that shows you what is known, says plainly what isn't, and learns from your own body rather than an average of everyone else's.

The other thing we both cared about from the start was who gets included. We try to show up for people who are often overlooked, and a period tracker is a place where that matters. Moonstrate is for everyone who menstruates, in language that never assumes who you are, and it leaves out the features that can hurt the people using it.

Why this exists

A period tracker holds some of the most sensitive information a person has, and the popular apps have a poor record of keeping it. Some shared it with other companies. Some leaked it. Some promised privacy and broke the promise. We think the only privacy claim worth making is one you can check, so Moonstrate keeps your data on your phone, sends nothing to us, and publishes its code.

We also think the wellness side of cycle tracking deserves more honesty than it gets. Moonstrate keeps the warmth of the inner-seasons idea and drops the rules that the evidence doesn't support. What it tells you about your body comes from your own logs and from research we grade and cite.

How it is funded

Nothing in the app is paid. The whole thing is free, permanently, for everyone. Support is voluntary: a tip jar inside the app, the links below, and, once the code is public, the usual open-source sponsorship channels. There is no investor, no ad network, and no data to sell.

Moonstrate is licensed under the AGPL-3.0. The source will be public before launch. Reading the code is the proof behind every privacy claim on this site.
